Perched high on the mountainside in Bayview Heights, this residence is a direct architectural response to its tropical setting. An in-depth study of tropical design principles underpinned the project, shaping a home that is both climatically responsive and deeply connected to its landscape.

The overall form adopts a single-depth pavilion arrangement, allowing every space to access light, air, and outlook. Generous roof overhangs extend well beyond the building envelope, providing critical shade and protection from heavy rainfall, while windows to all elevations enable effective cross-ventilation through rooms and circulation spaces.

The house is carefully oriented to capture prevailing breezes descending from the mountain and to frame expansive views across towards Cairns. Elevated and open, the architecture embraces its position rather than resisting it. The project was entered into the Australian Institute of Architects awards program, recognising its rigorous exploration of tropical design and site-responsive architecture.
